11:11: is it an 11/10?

I consider myself a burger expert, meaning that whenever I go out to eat, there is a 90% chance that I will order a burger. In my life, I have eaten hundreds of burgers. So, upon hearing that local Fond du Lac restaurant 11:11 had been placed at the top of Big Travel 7’s list of “The 25 Best Burgers in Wisconsin, I made plans to go check out their food for myself. Bringing along two of my closest friends, Martin Vu and John Lopez, I went out for lunch at 11:11’s newest location on Johnson Street.

The three of us ordered a few of the most interesting burgers on the menu, ensuring that we tried a broad spectrum of what was offered. The choice was difficult because every burger on their menu sounded so appetizing. We settled on the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger, the PB&J Burger, and 11:11’s signature menu item, the 11:11 Burger.

We also purchased an order of their large cheddar cheese fries, which comes topped with bacon and jalapenos, and an order of their beignets for dessert. If you are not a fan of burgers, 11:11 also has other items on the menu, such as macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, and other sandwiches. There is something on the menu for almost everyone.

11:11 prepares everything freshwhich meant we had to wait around 30 minutes before any of our food was ready. During the wait we walked around the restaurant, checking out everything the new location had to offer. While both locations serve identical menus, 11:11’s Johnson Street location features a bar, where customers can enjoy a wide variety of drinks. It also has a nice flatscreen TV in the waiting area.

Our appetites grew while watching the lady on Food Network cook up some lunch. Time passed quickly, and when the wait was over, we took our food to a booth and began dividing up the burgers into fourths, ensuring that each of us could try them allWe got distracted by the cheese fries however and had to stop ourselves from filling up too soon. Though some of the bacon was quite burnt, it ended up being a great pre-burger warmup. The jalapenos were fresh and quite strong as well. I already plan on going back for just the cheese fries.

The first burger we ate was the signature 11:11 Burger, which featured a thick patty filled with American and cheddar cheese. The top of the patty was covered in an additional layer of cheese and bacon. It was extremely juicy, and cheese oozed out with every bite. What made this burger great was the crunch that came from the bacon and additional cheese. Out of the three that we tasted, it was our favorite.

The next burger we ate was the PB&J Burger. It took some convincing at first in order to have everyone try it. While peanut butter and jelly is a staple sandwich, some might consider it wrong to put it on a burger. 11:11 knows their stuff and was able to put together a burger that embodies the spirit of a PB&J perfectly. My only gripe is that it could have included a salty element, such as bacon, in order to balance out the sweetness. Out of the three burgers we tried, it was our least favorite, but it was the most creative.

The last burger we ordered was the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. This burger was our second favorite, largely in part because it tasted exactly as it sounded. The BBQ was strong enough to define the burger, but not overpower it. The taste of bacon still came through, and the cheese was excellent. With one-fourth left of each burger, we all took the last piece from the burger we found to be our personal favorite (I ended up with the PB&J).

By the time we finished eating all three burgers, we realized that we still had all our beignets left. If you are unfamiliar with beignets, please head to 11:11 to try some. Seriously. Beignets are an amazing little dessert and remind me so much of the food you can find at the Wisconsin State Fair. We quickly finished the bag.

Is 11:11 really the best burger in Wisconsin? In my opinion, it is one of the best, but not the best (number one spot still goes to Solly’s Grille in Milwaukee)However, the burger’s at 11:11 are extremely unique and are all very ambitious. The food at 11:11 is the definition of comfort food, and I do not think it is possible to eat there and not be in a better mood afterward.

So, if you are stressed about school or work, tired of eating the same old PB&J sandwich for lunch each day, or you just want to enjoy a great burger, check out 11:11 in Fond du Lac.
